Is the Internet Good For Society?

As the internet turns 50, experts weigh future advances and ...

In this article, the author talks about how the majority of Americans whether they be young or old adults believe the internet has been good for society. “Today 64% of online adults ages 65 and older say the internet has been a mostly good thing for society.” However, that percentage decreased by 14 points because in 2014, 78% of those adults had this view. While these percentages clearly indicate that Americans mostly believe the internet has been good, it still brings up the question why they have decreased. My belief is the fact that technology continues to grow and become newer while us as Americans continue to grow older. Some of the older generation struggle with the new developments of technology and this could be the reason why some are claiming to not agree the Internet has been good for society. Another belief I have is the fact that as technology continues to grow and become newer, it becomes more expensive. This leaves out people who cannot afford technologies that include the Internet; therefore, leaving people who claim the internet is slowly becoming bad for society. This article relates to my Parenting and Technology class because we have recently talked about the digital divide, which brings up the notion that not everyone can even access the internet because nowadays technology is becoming more and more expensive. I personally believe the Internet is becoming bad for society because of all the media that is displayed on it, which has caused many societal problems we as Americans now face. https://www.pewresearch.org/internet/2018/04/30/declining-majority-of-online-adults-say-the-internet-has-been-good-for-society/
