Ghosting: Why Has It Become So Popular?

Pulling the sheet back on ghosting | AZ Big Media

In this article, the author gives a personal example of herself getting ghosted by a guy she had been dating and seeing for approximately a month. She explains how depressed and upset she was after she had finally realized she had been ghosted because the person she was seeing was not responding to any of her texts or emails. “A 2019 YouGov survey of U.S. adults found that 30 percent of them had ghosted a romantic partner or friend.” This is a pretty disturbing statistic because it is essentially saying that 1 out of 3 adults will get ghosted. It is also important to point out that the statistic also talks about how even friends get ghosted too. It personally blows my mind that people actually ghost other people and think that it is an okay thing to do. Unfortunately, social media and new technology gives people this option of being able to ghost other people. This article relates to my parenting and technology class because ghosting is a modern term that has developed from recent technology. Technology allows you to have a conversation with someone without even seeing their face. I believe people ghost each other because they have a lack of social skills and are just afraid to hurt another person’s feelings. So, ghosting has now become the safe alternative while also the easiest because it requires no effort and hopefully the person being ghosted gets the message that they do not want to communicate anymore. https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/2020/02/13/ghosting-is-normal-now-thats-completely-bonkers/?arc404=true
